The success of the movie NANA, starring Nakashima Mika and Miyazaki Aoi as two girls with the same name but contrasting personalities, has paved the way for its sequel. Nakashima, who received best newcomer awards and a best actress nomination for NANA, reprises her role for NANA 2, alongside a new line-up of young stars. Ichikawa Yui (Ju-on) replaces Miyazaki Aoi as the cute and cheerful lead, while Matsuda Ryuhei's band leader role is now taken up by Kyo Nobuo. Adapted from the hugely popular manga by Yazawa Ai and directed by Otani Kentaro, NANA 2 continues to move the audience with a story about two girls' friendship, and their quest for love and dreams. The film also features kinetic music performed by Nakashima Mika, recorded live in Tokyo.

Continuing the story from the first film, punk rock singer Osaki Nana (Nakashima Mika) and Komatsu Nana (Ichikawa Yui), sometimes called Hachi, have been sharing an apartment for a while. To cheer up Hachi who has just broken up with her boyfriend, Nana introduces her to Hachi's idol, Takumi (Tamayama Tetsuji), the leader of the band Trapnest. But Nana never expects this will bring Hachi an unstable romance. Meanwhile, Nana's relationship with her ex-boyfriend Ren (Kyo Nobuo), the guitarist of Trapnest, appears as a hot topic on the tabloids.
